"Don't Get Knocked Out" was the title of a free seminar presented by Sensei Avi Avramcheyiv from The New York Self Defense Academy in Queens last Sunday the 15th of December. The goal of the seminar: to teach people how to combat the so called "knockout game" that has caused several injuries and at least two deaths around the country.
About thirty people watched a hand-to-hand combat instructor demonstrate how to take down an active shooter at a church in Jamaica, Queens on July 14. The event was organized by State Sen. James Sanders Jr., whose district borders Valley Stream.
Residents in one Queens community learned techniques Thursday to help them take control in life-threatening situations. State Senator James Sanders sponsored a free self-defense class at the local church in Springfield Gardens. Participants learned different ways to disarm shooters from a self-defense expert and former Israeli soldier.
Orthodox Jews took their best swing at would-be "knockout" thugs Sunday, in the basement of a Queens synagogue. The group of about 30 people, ranging in age from 16 to 62, were given basic instruction in the Israeli martial art of krav maga as part of a self-defense course taught at the Young Israel of Queens Valley Synagogue in Kew Gardens.
